Dena and Lou McMurray were happy to expand their efforts to help kids in need in Fresno, their hometown. They sponsored new athletic shoes for 800 students in Fresno. New shoes that allow the kids to run, jump, and play.
Many areas in Fresno have a poverty rate approaching 40%, almost double the national average. Dena and Lou wanted to make sure these kids had what they needed to learn, play, and thrive. The couple learned about Shoes That Fit from Lou’s sister, Ann Morgan, who currently serves as Board Chair. Ann and her husband Steve even came up from Claremont to help out with the delivery.
Last year, the McMurrays brought shoes to kids at Jefferson Elementary, and this year they were glad to help kids at eight schools throughout Fresno. At Hanh Phan Tilley Elementary School, they handed out new shoes to the entire student body of almost 500 kids, and helped kids try on the shoes on to be sure they fit well.
They also sponsored shoes for students in seven other schools: Webster, Jefferson, West Fresno, Winchell, Lowell, Rowell, and Columbia Elementary Schools.
Lou and Dena shared what moved them: “We wanted to do something important for our community, and to be a part of the process. Shoes That Fit, is very gratifying and a joy to see the children’s reactions to getting a new pair of shoes.”
