Every year at his Holiday Open House, California State Assemblymember Chris Holden hosts a shoe drive for Shoes That Fit. But this year, the representative for the 41st District couldn’t host his usual gathering. Due to Covid-19, an in-person open house couldn’t happen. But he was determined to keep the shoe drive, so he and his office got creative. They decided to host a “Give and Go” Shoe Drive Drop Off.
So they sent out their invitations for Saturday, December 5th. Chris Holden and his staff assembled (all 6 feet apart and masked) outside his Pasadena district office. Thirty six individuals and families drove by and dropped off shoes for kids. Shoe boxes began piling up with sneakers of all sizes. The “shoe drivers” were happy to be able to help and chat with Holden through their car windows.
As a small thank you, he and his office gave all participants a Shop Local Bag, which highlighted several small businesses and provided resources for seniors and parents.
Chris Holden mentioned how happy he was to continue helping children, especially during this time when so many families are struggling financially.
Prior to his election to the Assembly, Holden served 24 years as a Pasadena City Councilmember and Mayor. He was the youngest City Councilmember at age 28 and only the second African American to serve as Mayor. Throughout his years of public service, Assemblymember Holden has been a champion for the San Gabriel Valley.
Chris Holden lives in Pasadena with his wife, Melanie, and children Nicholas, Alexander, Austin, Mariah and Noah. Holden is the son of former State Senator and LA City Councilman Nate Holden.
The shoe drive raised over 155 pairs of shoes for Southern California kids in need. Thank you Chris Holden, all your staff, and everyone who donated shoes!
