To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, Cal Poly Pomona’s Center for Community Engagement organized a volunteer day with Shoes That Fit, bringing students and faculty together to support children in need.
Twenty CPP students, four staff members, and additional faculty and community volunteers spent the morning at our Shoe Bank and National Distribution Center in Upland, California. Together, they sorted brand-new athletic shoes and labeling boxes for distribution to schools and communities across the country.
For Lauren Bernal, service-learning and volunteer coordinator for CPP’s Center for Community Engagement, the goal was to transform a day of remembrance into an opportunity to give back.
The volunteer experience also offered students an opportunity to honor the spirit of service and make a meaningful difference. Rei Vargas, a landscape architecture student, described the event as a chance to “spread goodness and hope.”
We are grateful to the CPP students, faculty, and staff who dedicated their time to helping children in need and turning remembrance into community action.
