Today, we invite you to see the impact of your support through the eyes of Natalie, a member of our Strategic Partner team.
“Earlier this week, I was in Uvalde for a community event where we distributed 1,300 pairs of shoes. This community endured immense tragedy in 2022, when a gunman took the lives of 19 students and 2 teachers. Uvalde is a small town, and nearly everyone was directly affected or knew someone who lost a loved one. I visited Robb Elementary, where the shooting occurred, and saw the crosses honoring the victims. Various artists around the city also painted murals for each victim, and one mural of a young girl with her green shoes really stood out. Students could not return to the Robb Elementary campus, so a new school, Legacy Elementary, was built and opened this October.
65 million dollars in donations to the Uvalde community helped make that possible. One of the most meaningful design elements is a prominent tree visible from multiple areas of the campus. It has two large branches and 19 smaller ones, symbolizing the two teachers and 19 students lost, a lasting memorial within the new school community. To honor the new school opening, we hosted a shoe distribution with Centene, Superior Health, CHDI, and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Families began lining up before doors even opened, and the children were filled with joy receiving new shoes!!!” – Natalie Ovcharenko
